A Jeet Kun Do student is expected to learn various combat systems and to be effective in all of them. This idea of cross training is similar to the practice of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in modern times. Many consider Jeet Kun Do to be the precursor of MMA.

Jeet Kun Do revolves around the important concept of interception. This involves recognising when your opponent is about to attack and intercepting it before they have the chance to do so. An experienced martial artist is able to pre-empt a strike from the slightest twitch or movement and intercept without hesitation. There is no room for stiffness or rigidness in Jeet Kun Do. All movements are lightening fast and every strike should be felt before it is seen.

A phrase that Lee used a lot is “fluid like water”. By this he means that you must have the flexibility and fluidity to adapt to each and every situation. You must not be rigid, neither in mind nor body. This is why pattern and fixed styles do not feature in Jeet Kun Do as you must know how and when to adapt according to the situation in which you find yourself.
