Self defense ensures that immediate personal danger can be prevented, but only if it comes in the form of a jab or swipe. When it comes to the controls of a cockpit, moves that only protect one’s self can hardly encompass the lives of a whole bullpen of people. In these instances, to learn martial arts would be the most effective means to put the kibosh on militarily-trained individuals.
Here’s a quick technique that has saved several people. You’re walking down the street minding your own business when you notice that just up ahead there is a man leaning against a building looking at you. As you get closer he comes off the wall and walks towards you. He’s now just about 6 feet away and he says, “Hey, do you have the time?” You instinctively look down at your watch and just as you’re focusing in on the dial you feel like a bomb exploded in your head. The stranger managed to distract you for just a second and as soon as you looked down at your watch he came forwards and punched you in the face with this right hand. Now your head is ringing, you’re seeing double, and your knees are starting to buckle. You’ve just been knocked nearly unconscious and you never saw it coming.
The commotion between the French passenger and the gunman caught the attention of 51 year old Mark Moogalian. Upon seeing the weapon, Moogalian made the decision to rush the attacker in an attempt to disarm him.
As reported by NBC News:
“Mark Moogalian told his wife to ‘go’ and then ‘rushed towards the gunman to remove … the Kalashnikov.’
She added: ‘I did not see my husband get shot, it happened too quickly and I was pretty much hiding behind seats. But I look at my husband through the seats at an angle and he looked straight at me and said, ‘I’m hit!’ … There was blood everywhere. I ran towards him and I could see that he a wound on his back, I then saw another wound by his neck.’”
After Moogalian’s attempt, three Americans and one British businessman were able to beat, subdue, and disarm the gunman. The Americans were Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos. Stone is a US Air Force member, while Skarlatos is a member of the Oregon National Guard. Sadler is a college student at Sacremento University. The British man, 62 year old Chris Norman, assisting in subduing and restraining the gunman.
